Zambia: Oversight by Young People Ensures Construction of Health Staff House in Kaande
In Kaande, Zambia, the construction of a health staff house using an allocation from the constituency development fund (CDF) was facilitated by increased community engagement and accountability.
Young people in Kaande took the initiative to ensure quality construction materials were used during the construction process of the health staff house by engaging with the Health Advisory Committee, section chairperson, and contractor. This led to the rejection of poor-quality blocks and demonstrated a commitment to infrastructure development and resource stewardship.
Through various trainings, the Partnership for Social Accountability (PSA) Alliance project capacitated adolescents and young people in social accountability monitoring and advocacy. They then ensured that allocated funds were used appropriately for the construction of health staff houses that would lead to improved living conditions for healthcare workers.
The improved living conditions contribute to staff retention and morale, ultimately enhancing the quality of healthcare services provided.
