Zambia: Revamped Makungwa Irrigation System Improves Livelihoods in Zondo

A functioning irrigation system is crucial for agricultural productivity and food security. In its absence, farmers struggle with water scarcity, leading to decreased crop yields and economic hardship.

The Makungwa irrigation system used to be unreliable, undermining the agricultural activities of the 61 households in Zondo village in the Mtenguleni area of Chipata District, Eastern Province, Zambia. However, with the installation of two solar-powered tanks in 2021, the irrigation system became more efficient and consistent, providing reliable water sources for smallholder farmers to access for their farming and household needs. This improvement allowed the smallholders to cultivate crops throughout the year, leading to increased food security and income stability.

The Partnership for Social Accountability (PSA) Alliance project trained social accountability groups in Mtenguleni with monitoring and advocacy skills, which the members used to ensure that government funds allocated towards the irrigation system revamping were utilised effectively. Transparent procurement processes and monitoring mechanisms ensured that the irrigation project received quality materials and efficient implementation. Additionally, regular inspections and reporting by the social accountability groups provided community oversight, ensuring the project progressed according to schedule and budget.
